Target debuts in Oak Cliff after long wait

Oak Cliff's wait for a Target store is over.

The massive retailer unveiled its new spot near Interstate 35E in the Dallas neighborhood that hasn't seen the same kinds of investments that other parts of North Texas have enjoyed.

The store, which began a soft opening Tuesday and will have an official grand opening Sunday, has been anticipated for roughly three years.

"It was important for Target to come to this community, to be able to provide to our guests the ease, the inspiration and the friendliness that Target brings," said Joy Strong, the store director. "And we felt that Oak Cliff was one of the most important areas to provide that service."

The new store is in Wynnewood Village, a shopping center at the northwest corner of Illinois Avenue and Zang Boulevard. It has been a destination for Oak Cliff residents since it was built in 1949.

The new Target store covers about 110,000 square feet with grocery options that include fresh fruits and vegetables, milk and lots of snacks. The big box offers vinyl records, big screen televisions, baby items and clothing options. There's a fitting room area.

"We do have products that are specialized to our community here when it comes to beauty products, personal care, chemical care and foods," Strong said.

CVS and Starbucks also are included in the store, which sits within view of a nearby Ross Dress for Less and Kroger.

This new store in Oak Cliff is part of the investments that Target is making in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Texas and beyond as it looks to push more physical retail stores closer to its customers, it said. It expects to open over 30 stores this year as part of its path to 300 new retail spots by 2035, in addition to more than 130 planned full-store remodels.

The new Oak Cliff store employs more than 160 people, Strong said.
